History of animation project: Walt Disney
When talking about the history of animation, clearly one of the most prominent names is Walt Disney, a man who is known for creating many beloved classic animated films. Disney had many ambitions during his early life. He was a cartoonist for his school paper and took drawing and photography classes at his school, however before he started his animation career he dropped out of school and ended up going to France to drive an ambulance for the red cross.
When he moved back to America, he followed his passion for newspaper cartoons and after experimenting with cel animation, he decided to open his first animation company. He and his team of employees begin making animations called Laugh O Grams, they were very well received. Many Laugh O Grams were short animated fairy tails, some of which Disney would later turn into full length movies. Surprisingly, even though the company had originally had success it fell into debt and was shut down in 1923.
Walt Disney, his brother Roy Disney, and Ub Iwerks his associate from Laugh O Grams moved to Hollywood and created their own studio that would eventually be called Walt Disney Studios. For some time Disney was creating normal animated short films with some success but eventually he started revolutionizing the industry. He made one of the first animated films with synchronized sound, Steamboat Willie which was a major success and eventually led to him creating many other films using synchronized sound that he called the Silly Symphony's . But later they made an even more revolutionary film The Flowers and the Trees which was not only the very first animated film in color but the first to win an Oscar.
He now faced what he was sure was his next step, making a full feature length animated film. The film would be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Although it was a long and grueling process considering the animators at Disney had never produced anything anywhere close to as long as this, it led to Snow White being one of the greatest successes of it's time. The film brought in $1.499 million even though it was released during the great depression. Obviously after the success of his first movie, Disney was very compelled to make more. He next released Pinocchio, then Fantasia, and many more, each surpassing its predecessors in quality.
Walt Disney was a man who showed the world that animation could be so much more than just black and white shorts. Through hard work he made animation into a storyteller like no other, and now his company is one of the largest and wealthiest in the world, with hundreds of animated and live action movies to it's name.
